David Sparks , well-known in Apple enthusiast communities as MacSparky, upon discovering a wedding speech he heard turned out to be generated by ChatGPT:
Writing is more than just a means to convey information; it’s a way to connect on a deeply personal level. Whether celebrating a milestone with loved ones or sharing insights in this newsletter, these moments are opportunities to express our unique perspectives and emotions. When we delegate this task to an AI robot, no matter how sophisticated, we lose a piece of that human connection. It feels like a form of erasure — a diminution of our individuality and the personal stamp we leave on our work and the world.
MacSparky is being proactive. He has vowed not to succumb to the temptations of outsourcing his writing to an LLM algorithm. Instead, he is going to use an alternative, one he calls “the SLM, the Sparky Language Model.”
I’m still trying to work out how I think about generative artificial intelligence in general, but if we are indeed entering a new era, then the AI-human relationship will require thinking carefully about when AI is the best tool for the job and when it isn’t.
